I wish that I had known, as a young mum, what I know now about anxiety. Back then, ‘anxiety’ was not a commonly used word, at least in any objective way. I didn’t understand what it really meant, and nobody around me – in schools, or offices, or amongst friends – really talked about it. I would hear words like ‘worry’, ‘stress, ‘fidgety’, and ‘procrastinator’ used to describe people and their behaviour. I didn’t know that worry and stress can lead to anxiety disorders. I didn’t know that being fidgety, or procrastinating were signs of anxiety. Had I known this, I would have educated myself about anxiety and tried to find out more about the appropriate tools and strategies to help me help my son at that early age. It was these experiences that led me to my work with Anxiety Canada, and this is why I am so proud of the work that we do. I am an advocate for raising awareness about anxiety, and for normalizing it, not only in homes but also in schools, workplaces, and all areas of community life, so that families can access the support and resources that they need, and so that we can all better understand the challenges that young people in particular, but also people of any age, face, so that their anxiety can be better understood, and so that they can receive the support they need to live happy, productive and fulfilled lives.
